Throughout this semester, this class has taught me that
as a society we need to be more mindful of how technology is being used around
us. From the ways that they can perpetuate racism, sexism, separation, hate,
abuse, control and surveillance to the ways that they allow for positive gains,
it is very critical to think profoundly of the effects of the technology being
created. I learned that I need to question the pros and cons of every device,
application, software, hardware, and system, and work harder to initiate these
trends of conversation. As a result, I have been more active on Reddit during
this pandemic and have conducted more searches for research related to topics
like these. I feel that there is a lot that we do not understand, and
personally I should work to learn more and share my discoveries, so that others
can also be informed. Overall, this class had a very thorough and friendly approach
to this topic and reminds me of both Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone, as
cheeky discussions that highlight serious social issues, and how to engage and
communicate these concepts with others. So, thank you, Dr. Foster for a solid
semester that allowed me to sharpen my critical thinking and analytical skills.
Best regards,
M.C.
